Just Me, The Fish & The Sea
Last weekend I got the opportunity to see Patrick Watson in concert and I think it changed my life. I find it hard to develop an intimate relationship with an artist and their music during a concert, surrounded by some people who are only there to be seen. I recognize that is both pretentious and ignorant of me to say, but as some of my favourite artists get more popular, I can't help being cynical about losing what I felt was a personal, intimate connection with the music.
Seeing Patrick Watson in concert, at the newly renovated Queen Elizabeth Theatre which seats about 3000 people, the intimate connection I have with his music was only solidified. Between insisting that all of the lights be turned off when he played "The Great Escape" and walking through the aisles during the encore singing into this speaker box contraption, my cynicism towards concert-goers everywhere vanished. In the second encore he sang "Man Under Sea" without any music or a microphone and asked everyone to sing along... it was definitely one of those moments that changed the way I experience music.
Needless to say, Patrick Watson was incredible and put on an amazing show. Not to mention my friend Carly and I had to ask him where the entrance was as he had a smoke in the ally behind the theatre!
Enjoy one of my favourite songs which he played during his second encore, "Drifters", off of Close to Paradise. It's an oldie, but a goodie.
Patrick Watson has an uncanny ability to make music that seems to be the soundtrack of my life.
